Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I have my chimney swept?
It's generally recommended to have your chimney swept at least once a year, especially if you use it regularly during the colder months. However, the frequency can depend on factors such as the type of fuel you burn and how often you use your fireplace or stove. Some common signs that you require a sweep include a strong smell of smoke in your home, visible soot or creosote buildup around the fireplace or stove, reduced draft, and smoke coming back into the room when you use your fireplace.
Can I sweep my chimney myself?
While there are DIY chimney sweeping kits available, it's generally recommended to hire a professional chimney sweep. They have the experience, tools, and knowledge to thoroughly clean your chimney and identify any potential issues that may need attention.
Are there any safety precautions I should take before a chimney sweep arrives?
It's a good idea to clear the area around your fireplace or stove and ensure that pets and children are kept away during the chimney sweep. And whilst I bring my own sheets and take every care to protect your property, you may also want to cover nearby furniture or flooring to protect against any falling soot or debris.
What if the chimney sweep finds a problem during the inspection?
If the chimney sweep identifies any issues such as cracks, blockages, or excessive creosote buildup, they will typically provide recommendations for repairs or further action. It's important to address any problems promptly to ensure the safety and efficiency of your chimney. In rare cases, a NACS Warning Notice may be issued, this warns that the chimney or appliance is not safe for use.
Can you provide a certificate of sweeping?
Yes, as a registered member of the National Association of Chimney Sweeps, I provide a NACS certificate for every chimney swept, after every sweep.
